STEUBEN CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – Steuben County Sheriff Rodney Robinson announced on Tuesday that an arrest has been made in connection with the investigation into the murder of 36-year-old Daniel J. Sheets.
In July of 2021, Sheets’ body was discovered in the basement of a burned-out residence in the 5700 block of North CR 675 E in Steuben County’s rural Fremont Township by Sheriff’s deputies who were following up on a missing person complaint involving Sheets.
During the initial crime scene search following the discovery of the victim, 30-year-old Steven Michael Restemayer was located hiding in a camper adjacent to the residence. He was taken into custody on an unrelated outstanding arrest warrant and quickly became a person of interest. After nearly 5 months of investigation, an arrest warrant was issued on 12/14/2021 charging Restemayer with Sheet’s murder.
The warrant was served on Restemayer at the Steuben County Jail where he has been incarcerated on unrelated charges since his initial arrest back in July. Restemayer remains held without bond pending an initial court appearance. The investigation is ongoing by the Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Indiana State Police.
