FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A crash Tuesday night off East Gump Road injured five people, including three children who were seriously hurt.
The Fort Wayne Police Department says that just before 10 p.m., an off-duty officer was at a light on Gump and witnessed a pickup truck fail to yield to a minivan driving south on Coldwater Road. The GMC pickup collided with the Dodge – causing the van to also hit the off-duty officer’s car.
Three children and two adults were in the minivan. All five were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Doctors later said one of the children had life-threatening injuries.
The juvenile driver and a juvenile passenger in the pickup had minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. The off-duty officer was not hurt.
Police do not think speed or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
It remains under investigation.
The Fort Wayne Police Department released the following:
On Tuesday, 07/09/2024, at approximately 9:52 PM, an off-duty Fort Wayne Police Officer was driving a fully marked squad car at the intersection of East Gump Road and Coldwater Road. The officer was traveling eastbound on Gump Road and stopped at a red traffic signal at Coldwater Road. A GMC pickup truck was traveling northbound on Coldwater Road and a Dodge minivan was traveling southbound on Coldwater Road.
Preliminary reports indicate northbound and southbound traffic on Coldwater Road had a green light at the traffic signal. It appears the driver of the pickup truck failed to yield the right of way and attempted to turn left in front of the minivan traveling southbound on Coldwater Road. The collision caused the minivan to make minimal physical contact with the squad car that was stopped at the red traffic signal.
The juvenile driver and the juvenile passenger in the GMC pickup truck had a complaint of minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. The minivan was occupied by two adults and three juveniles. All five occupants of the minivan were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. One of the juveniles was downgraded to life-threatening condition by a physician at the hospital. The officer did not report any injuries at the scene. Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
