FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana State Police and Allen County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of an inmate at the Allen County Jail.
27-year-old Steven Perry Jr. of Fort Wayne was found unresponsive in his cell just after 7 p.m. Monday. Perry was pronounced dead at a Fort Wayne hospital. He has been an inmate since January 31, 2024.
Indiana State Police released the following:
At the request of the Allen County Sheriff, the Indiana State Police is investigating the death of an inmate at the Allen County Jail.
ISP’s preliminary investigation has found that on Monday February 26, 2024, at approximately 7:03pm, inmates housed in “6C Block” alerted jail staff to an unresponsive inmate. The inmate was identified as Steven M. Perry Jr., 27, of Fort Wayne. Jail and nursing staff responded, located Perry still unresponsive, and immediately began medical care until EMS personnel arrived. Perry was transported by ambulance to Lutheran Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
Earlier this morning, as part of the ongoing investigation, an autopsy was conducted by the Allen County Corner at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center. Toxicology results from that autopsy are pending. The cause and manner of death remains pending with the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
Perry had been incarcerated in the Allen County Jail since January 31, 2024.
This is an ongoing investigation. No further information is available for release at this time.

On February 26th, 2024, at about 20:30 hours the Allen County Coroner’s Office was notified of a death investigation at the Allen County Jail, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The patient had been transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
An autopsy has been completed and notification has been made to the next of kin of Steven Matthew Perry Jr., male, White, 27 years of age, from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The Cause of Death is Pending and the Manner of Death is Pending.
The incident remains under investigation by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, the Indiana State Police, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
