PORTAGE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Beaches along the Indiana Dunes National Park are closed after rust-colored liquid spilled into Lake Michigan from the U.S. Steel plant in Portage, Indiana.
Indiana and U.S. environmental officials are investigating the Sunday night incident and have been collecting water samples. Indiana American Water also shut down its Ogden Dunes treatment facility as a precaution.
The plant provides water to customers in Northwest Indiana.
U.S. Steel closed its plant and is conducting its own investigation.
