FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department says that a woman is facing new charges in connection to her infant child ingesting drugs last year.
Kayla Devreax, 25, is now charged after a long investigation. Police say that in August of last year, the baby was found unresponsive in a Joshua Lane apartment on the city’s southeast side.
Police said at the time that the baby was having trouble breathing and their eyes were rolled back. Fast-acting officers administered the anti-narcotic Narcan and the baby responded quickly.
An investigation and tests revealed the infant had cocaine and fentanyl in their system. Police also found fentanyl in the apartment.
After months of investigating, the FWPD says an arrest warrant was issued for Devreax last month and she was arrested Wednesday.
The FWPD released the following:
FWPD officers were summoned to an apartment after Kayla Devreax called 911 to report that an infant was unresponsive. Officers arrived along with Paramedics from the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority (TRAA). Lifesaving measures were performed on the child including the administering of antinarcotic medication. The infant immediately responded to those lifesaving measures.
Detective Jason Brown was initially assigned as the Preliminary investigator. A substance that tested positive for fentanyl was found inside the apartment. The case was later transferred to Detective Michelle Brown, an investigator assigned to the Crimes Against
Persons Section (CAPS). She submitted her case after a lengthy investigation, which resulted in charges being filed against Ms. Devreax. An arrest warrant was issued on April 16, 2024.
Ms. Devreax was arrested on May 01, 2024 and is awaiting her initial hearing.
