FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Allen County Public Library’s annual Winter Reading Program will launch on January 1 with a new reading challenge and new prizes for all participants. Winter SPARK encourages readers to explore science, play, art, reading, and knowledge. The program is open to all ages and runs the month of January.
ACPL representatives released the following:
New this year – participants will receive their first prizes, including a new book, upon registering for the program!
“Winter SPARK blends reading, learning, and cozy family-themed activities to help people of all ages stave off the winter blues, and discover new ways to engage with their Library,” said Youth Services Manager Jacki Fulwood. “We encourage families to participate and learn together.”
The theme for this year’s Winter SPARK program is “Where We Come From” which explores topics of family history and identity. The ACPL has a rich history of connecting literature and family history research through its extensive Genealogy collection. In the Genealogy Center, patrons are encouraged to discover their own personal stories
“Research shows that when people are more closely connected to their own family stories, they have a deeper sense of self and a stronger connection to their community,” said ACPL Director of Special Collections Curt Witcher. “The Winter SPARK theme shines a light on the importance of knowing where we come from, and how we got here. We all crave that connection to a personal narrative and the ACPL’s Genealogy Center is here to help.”
Throughout January, participants who attend a library program, finish a book of their choice, or complete activities such as creating ancestor charts, sharing family stories, creating family-themed arts, and more, will receive an additional prize. Participants may also log their reading time using Beanstack, ACPL’s online reading engagement tool.
