STEUBEN CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a recent telephone scam.
Officials say there have been multiple reports of telephone calls from a person claiming to be with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. The caller states that money needs to be paid to resolve an arrest warrant.
This is a SCAM. The Sheriff’s Office DOES NOT call people demanding money to take care of an arrest warrant or anything else over the phone.
So far, it appears that registered sex offenders are mainly being targeted, but anyone could potentially be called. The scammer uses the fear of arrest to try and convince people to pay money, and there has been some financial loss already. These calls often originate outside of the United States and the money ultimately ends up going overseas. Because of this, the caller may have a foreign accent. Please contact the Sheriff’s Office with any questions at 260-668-1000 Ext. 5000.
