FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – An apartment fire on the southwest side of Fort Wayne has claimed one life.
Firefighters responded to the flames at Autumn Creek Apartments just before 8 p.m. Sunday and found an adult dead in the hallway of a first-floor apartment.
One person was rescued off a second-floor balcony.
The fire remains under investigation.
Fort Wayne Fire Department officials released the following:
FWFD crews dispatched for smoke inside an apartment building. Crews arrived on scene finding smoke inside the common stairwell of the building. An occupant was on a second-floor balcony in rear of building and fire crews rescued them with a ladder. Crews located fire in a first-floor apartment and forced entry, locating an adult victim in the apartment’s hallway. Fire was found in a bathroom and hallway and extinguished. Firefighters searched surrounding apartments and ventilated the smoke from the building. Fire investigators were on scene working to determine the cause of the fire. TRAA, FWPD, Neighborhood Code Enforcement, AEP, and NIPSCO all responded and assisted on scene.
