FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – No people were hurt in a weekend fire on Hackberry Lane in the Crestwood area. Sadly though, several pets were not so lucky.
Firefighters say a dog and six cats died from smoke inhalation in the Saturday night fire that broke out around 11:30.
Two people who were home at the time managed to make it out without injuries. There’s no word on what started the fire.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department released the following:
Fort Wayne firefighters responded to a reported house fire in the 6500 block of Hackberry Lane this evening. Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the home and the occupants outside. Firefighters entered the home and found a substantial amount of smoke in the residence. A small fire was located in the basement area of the home and immediately extinguished. The residence was searched and multiple cats were located along with one dog. All animals had succumbed to the smoke conditions. No one was injured during this incident. A cause of the fire is under investigation at the time of this report. FWFD was assisted by TRAA, NIPSCO, AEP, NCE and FWPD.
