FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne police say a weekend standoff began as a drunken card game between 57-year-old Thomas Neuhaus and his adult son.
According to local reporting, at some point they got into a fight over drunk driving, that’s when police say punches were thrown, a knife was pulled, glasses were thrown, and the younger Neuhaus left.
He told police his father then followed and fired a gun while he was getting his family into his car.
Fort Wayne Police responded, and had to bust through Neuhaus’ door to arrest him after an hours-long standoff failed to end peacefully.
Fort Wayne Police Department officials released the following:
On February 26, 2022, officers responded to a home in the 1200 block of Glenwood Ave on a report of a domestic disturbance in which gunshots had reportedly been fired. Officers arrived and determined through investigation that the arrestee, Thomas Neuhaus, had gotten into a physical altercation with a family member during which he allegedly fired a shot in their direction.
Officers attempted to get Thomas to exit the residence to be interviewed, but Thomas did not comply.
Due to the violence that had already ensued, the Emergency Services Team, Crisis Response Team, and Air Support Unit were summoned to the scene in hopes of bringing a peaceful resolution.
Negotiators attempted for over three hours to make contact with Thomas to motivate him to surrender, but Thomas did not comply. Shortly after 12:30am, EST officers breached the front door, and finally convinced Thomas to surrender without incident.
Thomas was taken to a local hospital for a minor injury sustained during the altercation with a family member was then arrested.
