UPDATE (January 4, 2022):
We now know the identity of a man killed when he crashed into a tree in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
While we know that he was the first traffic fatality of the new year we still do not know what caused the January 1 crash on Kensington close to North Anthony Boulevard.
The Allen County Coroner’s Office released the following:
The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified and made notifications to the next of kin of the deceased individual that was involved in a motor vehicle crash in the 1200 Block of Kensington Boulevard, in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana, at about 02:31 hours, Saturday, January 1, 2022.
He has been identified as Oscar Anthony Salgado, male, Hispanic, age 20, of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Oscar Anthony Salgado was the operator of a motor vehicle that left the roadway and struck a tree. Mr. Salgado was pronounced deceased at the scene by Three Rivers Ambulance Authority.
Oscar Anthony Salgado Cause of Death is Multiple Blunt Force Injuries due to Motor Vehicle Crash Versus Tree, and the Manner of Death is Accident. Oscar Anthony Salgado is the 1st traffic fatality for Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2022.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – FWPD officials say that a person is dead after crashing a pickup truck into a tree Saturday morning.
The Fort Wayne Police Department responded just after 2:30 a.m. to the 1200 block of Kensington Boulevard, off N. Anthony Blvd. Police reported that witnesses called in the crash – stating that a truck had hit a tree.
When officers and paramedics arrived, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Right now, their identity, as well as the cause of the crash, remains unknown.
The Fort Wayne Police Department released the following:
On Saturday, 01/01/2022, at approximately 2:31 AM, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 1200 block of Kensington Blvd. reference a vehicle crash with injuries. Witnesses reported a pickup truck struck a tree. Officers arrived and located a Chevy pickup truck with heavy front-end damage. Paramedics pronounced the driver/sole occupant of the truck deceased at the scene.
Preliminary information indicates the pickup truck was traveling southbound on Kensington Blvd. when it left the roadway and struck a tree. Investigators confirmed speed was a contributing factor in the crash. They were unable to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor at this time.
This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Coroner’s Office, and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The Allen County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim.
