UPDATE (September 23, 2021):
The man who authorities say shot a Posey County deputy in the head is out of the hospital and in jail. Prosecutors filed attempted murder charges yesterday against 70-year-old Paul Wiltshire.
They say he shot Deputy Bryan Hicks in the head during a shootout last weekend.
Hicks remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition. Wiltshire is being held without bond.
Indiana State Police released the following:
At approximately 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Paul Wiltshire, 70, of New Harmony, was released from Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville and arrested for the attempted murder of Posey County Sheriff’s Deputy Bryan Hicks.
Troopers transported Wiltshire to the Posey County Jail where he was booked-in for Attempted Murder, a Level 1 Felony. After the book-in process was completed, Wiltshire was transported to the Warrick County Jail where he is currently being held without bond.
The investigation is continuing.
MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (ADAMS) – A deputy in southern Indiana is fighting for his life following a weekend shootout. The Indiana State Police say Deputy Bryan Hicks was hit in the head during a shootout Saturday night.
The suspect, 70-year-old Paul Wiltshire, was shot several times. He is recovering in a local hospital. Posey County’s sheriff says Wiltshire was a reserve deputy with the department over 16 years ago. The sheriff says deputies went to Wiltshire’s house on Saturday for a welfare check.

The Posey County Sheriff’s Deputy shot last night in New Harmony has been identified as Deputy Bryan Hicks, 41. Hicks is still being treated at Deaconess Midtown Hospital for a single gunshot wound to his head.
The suspect has been identified as Paul D. Wiltshire,70, of 612 Short Street, New Harmony. Wiltshire is still being treated at Deaconess Midtown Hospital for multiple gunshot wounds.
Posey County Sheriff Tom Latham would like to extend his gratitude for the countless thoughts and prayers for Deputy Hicks and his family. The Posey County Sheriff’s Office is asking for continued prayers for Deputy Hicks, his family, and the sheriff’s office.
