FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department is detailing what happened on Friday at the airport that may have left some passengers unsettled.
They say that they received information that they deemed credible that a suspicious bag may have been a bomb. After calling in special units though, it was determined to be a false alarm.
FWPD released the following to the media on Monday:
On Friday, August 6, 2021, at approximately 2:29 PM, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the Fort Wayne International Airport in reference to a suspicious bag. The TSA had received information about a bomb threat via social media. After further evidence was uncovered by the TSA and Airport Public Safety, they believe it was a potentially credible threat and the Fort Wayne Police Department was asked for mutual aid.
The airport was shut down and Fort Wayne Police Department provided Officers to secure the perimeter. Additionally from the Fort Wayne Police Department, Command Officers, the Hazardous Deposal Unit and two explosive detection Police K9s were dispatched to assist.
By approximately 4:11 PM, the Fort Wayne Police Hazardous Device Unit had screened the device and declared it was not a threat. The Airport was subsequently reopened. The incident continues to be under investigation by the TSA, the Airport and the Fort Wayne Police Department.
