Fort Wayne, Ind. (ADAMS) – The man charged with the beating death of his girlfriend’s toddler now has learned when he will go to trial.
27-year-old Mitchell Vanryn of 6902 Palmetta Court, was in Allen County court Wednesday. He is facing a murder charge for the November 29th death of 2-year-old Malakai Garrett. Vanryn also faces additional charges of Aggravated Battery of a Child and Domestic Battery Resulting in the Death of a Child.
Malakai was taken by Vanryn, from a home on Palmetta Court that evening to Fire Station 13. Vanryn said he said he found the boy unresponsive. The boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition where he died.
Autopsy results released by the Allen County Coroner showed Malakai had extensive bruising in numerous locations including his chest, abdomen, back, face and head. He also had severe injuries to internal organs including the liver, stomach, small intestine as well as a lacerated pancreas. His death was ruled a homicide. According to the release, the injuries “were consistent with that of multiple blows and strikes from a closed fist punch.”
Mitchell Vanryn will go to trial May 15th, 2018. The court has it scheduled to last three days.
