Prosecutors identify officer in deadly South Bend shooting

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (ADAMS) – Prosecutors in South Bend say a 19-year-veteran of the force is the one who pulled the trigger in a deadly weekend officer-involved shooting. Mayor Pete Buttigieg took a break from the presidential campaign trail to address the issue.

Authorities yesterday identified Sergeant Ryan O’Neill as the officer who shot and killed Eric Logan early Sunday morning. Prosecutors also released a timeline that said Logan was breaking into cars near the city’s downtown. O’Neill, they said, fired when Logan came at him with a knife. Logan would later die, O’Neill was treated after Logan threw the knife at him.

Police shooting victim Eric Logan’s wife, Shafonia Logan, says she’s not buying the officer’s claim that her husband came at him with a knife.

South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski says the grieving process after police shootings never ends.
