Coroner rules Senate Ave. shooting victim’s death a homicide

UPDATE (January 21, 2020):

The Allen County Coroner has ruled the death of a man on Senate Avenue early Monday morning a homicide. Reportedly, FWPD officials think his shooting was the result of a drive-by and the victim’s home was an unintended target.

The coroner’s office released the following to the media on Tuesday:

“The autopsy has been completed and notification has been made to the next of kin, of the male victim that was located in a home, in the 3400 block of Senate Avenue, in Fort Wayne, on January 20, 2020, approximately 00:07 hours. He has been positively identified as Than Kahn Khai, male, Asian, 49 years of age, of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Cause of Death has been determined to be Gunshot Wound of the neck and the Manner of Death is Homicide.
Than Khan Khai is the 3rd Homicide victim in Allen County for 2020.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.”

ORIGINAL STORY (January 20, 2020):

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Monday morning.

A family member of the victim called authorities just after midnight saying that there had been a shooting in a home just off South Anthony Boulevard.

Officers responded to 3411 Senate Avenue to find a man suffering from gunshot wounds. FWPD officials only described him as being in his “late 40’s.”

Fort Wayne police officials released, in part, the following statement regarding the shooting:

“Medical personnel arrived on scene and declared the male deceased. Preliminary investigation indicated that the shots may have come from outside the residence as shell casings were found in the street.”

The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene investigators are handling the case.
