Body pulled from Maumee River was that of a missing local man

UPDATE (May 6, 2021):

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified a man found dead in the Maumee River on Tuesday. Officials say that he was reported missing in April and that he drowned. The cause of his death was ruled as Asphyxia.

The Coroner’s Office released the following:

The Allen County Coroner’s Office was contacted at about 0910 hours on Tuesday May 4, 2021 reference, the discovery of the body in the Maumee River. Fort Wayne Police Department, Three Rivers Ambulance Authority Medics, Fort Wayne Firefighters and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources were dispatched to the 700 block of Edgewater Avenue, Fort Wayne for the water recovery. Fort Wayne Fire Department recovered the decedent and removed the body from the river. Death was pronounced on scene by the paramedics. The decedent was transported from the scene to the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center for autopsy.

An autopsy has been completed and the next of kin has been notified of the death. The decedent has been positively identified as Alexander Ray Turner, male black 28 years of age from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Alexander Ray Turner was reported missing to the Fort Wayne Police Department on April 29, 2021 by family members.

The Cause of Death is Asphyxia due to Drowning and the Manner of Death is Accident.
This incident remains under investigation by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

 

ORIGINAL STORY:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne Police say that a deceased man was pulled from the Maumee River Tuesday morning.

The search initially began after a call came in about a possible person in the water that may have been floating.

Officials released the following late Tuesday morning:

On May 4th, 2021 at approximately 8:41 am FWPD Officers, Fire Personnel, DNR Officers and Medics were notified of a possible body floating in the Maumee River in the area of Spy Run Ave. and Lafayette St. First Responders began searching the area; drones, water craft, and foot canvassing were used in an effort to locate the body.

The adult male body was located by a drone on the Southside of the river snarled in underbrush. Department of Natural Resource Officers made the scene and took over the investigation because waterways are their jurisdiction. The body was pulled from the river by DNR and Fire rescue personnel and transported to the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center by Midwest funeral home; where an autopsy will be performed.

The Coroner’s Office will release the cause and manner of death, as well as the identity of the deceased pending the result of the autopsy and next of kin notification.

This incident remains under investigation by the Department of Natural Resources.
