Alcohol believed to be a factor in deadly motorcycle crash

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana State Police investigated a fatal single vehicle crash that occurred in the early morning hours of August 1st, 2019. The crash occurred at 12:05 AM on the exit ramp from Interstate 65 northbound to US Highway 30 in Merrillville, Indiana.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Alaa Hamed revealed that on August 1st, 2019 at approximately 12:05 AM a 2006 blue Honda motorcycle was exiting Interstate 65 at the 253 mile marker, which is the exit for US 30, when for unknown reasons it left the roadway. The motorcycle struck a highway sign and then overturned, fatally injuring the driver. The driver was identified as William Fortner, 25, of Hobart, Indiana. Notification has been made to the family. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead by the Lake County Coroner at the scene of the crash.
