COLUMBUS, Ohio (ADAMS) – Ohio stands a good chance of breaking the previous statewide annual tornado record this year.
Including the ones recorded in Delaware, Knox, Muskingum, and Licking counties on Wednesday night, the National Weather Service has confirmed 62 tornadoes across the state since the beginning of 2024. That is the same number as the standing record set in 1992.
The average number of twisters per year for the Buckeye State is 19, but those averages have nearly doubled since the 1990s. Weather and climate experts have made note of what seems to be a shift in the area referred to as “Tornado Alley”. They say that shift could be leading to the increase in twisters here.
