UPDATE (July 19, 2022):
GREENWOOD, Ind. (ADAMS) – A damaged laptop used by the gunman in Sunday’s deadly shooting at an Indiana mall is being sent to the FBI for analysis.
Authorities say the shooter was armed with three guns and over 100 rounds of ammunition when he walked into the food court at Greenwood Park Mall. Three people, a married couple and another man, were killed before an armed witness was able to stop the bloodshed, opening fire with his own weapon and fatally shooting the gunman. Local police are calling the 22-year-old a hero for his actions.
The mayor of an Indiana town is commending the young man who stopped the shooter. Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said the individual saved many lives during Sunday’s incident. The city’s police chief said the suspect had a juvenile record, but no history with authorities as an adult. They believe he walked to the mall and had multiple weapons on him along with a bunch of ammo. A search of his apartment led authorities to believe he was trying to destroy evidence as the oven was found on at a high temperature with a can of butane nearby.
The Greenwood Park Mall is expected to reopen today. Thirty-year-old Victor Gomez, 37-year-old Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, and 56-year-old Pedro Pineda were killed in the gunfire. The 20-year-old suspect was also killed after being shot by an armed citizen. Police say Jonathan Sapirman brought three guns and over 100 rounds of ammo into the mall, but his motive is unknown.
